continue out to the third street tunnel. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. the people of the district sent a message loud and clear that they want to bring character, integrity and leadership back to the mayor's office. that is city council chair convincement gray and his supporters celebrating victory over mayor fenty in the democratic primary race for mayor y the victory means gray is a virtual shoe-in to be the next mayor of the district. matt ackland joins us with more on our top story. >> good morning. i'm sure a lot of people went to bed last night not knowing swat result of this race would be and they are finding out this morning that vincent gray actually is the winner of this primary election. but boy t took some time. the polls closed at 8:00 last

night. we thought we were going to see some results an hour, maybe two hours afterwards but things came in slowly. the board of elections is being criticized for taking its time. we wanted to take you to the celebration. this all took place right around 2:00 a.m. this morning. vincent gray walking up in front of supporters to thank them for everything. we should give you some numbers here. 90% of the precincts reporting. vincent gray got about 59,285 votes. grey told his supporters it is now time for everyone to come together, all district resident to come together after this long campaign and work towards one city. back to you guys. >> thank you. and there were other primary contests in several

maryland counties. >> including the one in prince george's county where stacy cohan is this morning outside the county administration building. >> reporter: good morning. the county administration building as you well know is where the county executive houses the entire fifth floor and pretty soon we'll have i new occupant here that. will be rushern baker. he did claim victory beating his opponents last night. we have a breakdown of the numbers. rushern baker won with 44% of the vote. his next closest contenter was shaimpg michael jackson who got 33% and samuel dean got 1% -- his next closest contender was sheriff michael jackson would got 333%. michael jackson had the endorsement of the current county executive but that was not enough to propel him to the win. rush enbaker has long talked about reforming education, reducing crime and helping to improve the financial situation here in prince george's county. we have a lot of foreclosures here. however, the county has its aaa bond rating which baker would

like to keep intact. we'll hear more of what he has to say at an 11:00 a.m. press conference being held at his headquarters in largo. the race for governor in maryland now set. it will be a rematch of the 2006 battle between robert ehrlich and martin o'malley. governor o'malley easily beat two challengers in the democratic primary winning 86% of the vote. on the republican sued, former governor ehrlich captured the gop nomination with 57% of the vote over challenger brian murphy. in other news, a hostage standoff in maryland. it all started around 10:00 last night. a man with a gun walked into a home in the 8 # hundred block of richboro road in forestville, got into an argument with a woman and is now holding her inside the home. there were other people inside when this all went down but they were able to get out okay. police are considering this a domestic situation. also new, montgomery county police are searching for more suspects in a burglary attempt

and car theft. it happened around 2:00 this morning in the area of river road and goldsboro road in bethesda. police got a call about suspects lurking near a home. they tried to break in, police say, but fled in a stoling vehicle when officers arrived. so far, one person has been arrested. the nfl is investigating the alleged harrassment of a reporter during a new york jets practice and now redskins running back clinton portis is bringing even more attention to the story. we'll have the details coming up next. several other primaries held across the country yesterday. in delaware, a tea party candidate pulled off a huge upset. we'll have more on that straight ahead. as we head to break, keep in mind, we'll have much more on the primary race results in maryland and d.c. this also scrolling across your screen. can you find the latest numbers and updates on myfoxdc.com as well. here...

one of the two international students hit by a car in adams morgan last week has died. julia backlight ner passed away yesterday. police a shamika adams hit the women. police say she was drunk at the time. adams could face more serious charges as early as today. the other woman hit is recovering. more fallout from the alleged harrassment of a mention tan tv reporter. iep - - harrassment of a tv reporter. clinton portis has said players

afternoon than i thought would. but today will be sun junior and less breezy. it will -- but today will be sunnier and less breezy. it will be an improvement. we made it into the 80s yesterday as expected. reagan national actually got a couple of degrees warm he than i thought it would, 84 degrees at reagan national. 81 at dulles international. bwi marshall made it up to 80 degrees yesterday. we'll see similar temperatures for today. reagan is at 63 right now. satellite-radar picture for the region, quiet conditions for this morning. just a couple of clouds out there during the early-morning hours. mostly sunny for today. nothing to cause any weather to move our way in term of precipitation or anything like that. it is not even going to be particularly breezy. as a matter of fact, it won't be that humid today either. there is more weather out to the west in the form some of rain moving across the plains.

that is a line where the frontal system that will make its way through here i think thursday into friday, that could bring some showers to us thursday into friday. maybe even a couple of thunderstorms here or there. let's look at the tropics. this is tropical storm karl, the newest tropical storm. we have three tropical systems in play right now. tropical storm karl has maximum sustained wind of 65 miles per hour. it is impacting the yucatan peninsula where there are tropical storm warning in effect. this, we revisit hurricane igor. hurricane igor still a category four hurricane, a big hurricane. maximum sustained winds 145 miles per hour. so a very powerful storm system. then we have hurricane julia, also a category four hurricane. it is smaller, more compact than igor but another strong storm with maximum sustained winds of 15 miles per hour. all these storms bear watching, particularly karl right now and if you have any interest in bermuda, you are interested in

igor because that looks like it will impact or could impact bermuda by this weekend. we have to wait and see. our forecast look like this. mostly sunny skies. cool morning but a warm afternoon. high about 83 degrees. comfortable humidity levels. going to be a great day today. for your five-day forecast tomorrow, not a bad start to the day. but we'll get some clouds working in here during the afternoon into the evening. late showers, maybe some thunderstorms thursday night into very early friday morning. 80degrees for your high friday and then the weekend looks great. highs in the low to mid-80s with lots of sunshine saturday and sunday. now, let's get an update on traffic. for that, we go to julie wright. >> all right. better news unbound new york avenue. the stalled tractor-trailer we had mentioned at florida avenue has cleared owe the road has been reopened. suitland parkway inland at suitland road, we have problems there due to a water main break tying up the two right lanes in the outbound direction. inbound, you should find everything open.

behind me the live shot of 270 with everybody coming southbound out of rockville. no problems reported on the top stretch. beltway between beth bethesda and college park. 197 and briar wood south of cherry hill, we have an accident reported. traffic slowing between the two 234 interchanges and again approaching fair oaks that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. a campaign volunteer accidentally crashed through a large plate glass window at hea take a listen as karen grey houston was guying a live update. >> those are people targeted by the -- oh, my gosh. don't get too frightened. somebody leaned again the glass and it broke out. >> a volunteer fell through a nine foot by nine foot window

and was bleeding from head pretty bad but he was able to walk to an ambulance under his own power. a small ruckus broke out when fenty supporters tried to block cameras from filming the crash. in the race to replace vincent gray, at-large councilman kwame brown handily beat former councilmember vincent orange and dorothy douglas. now to the council at large seat, phil mendelsohn won the democratic primary despite concern that name confusion over another candidate might cost mendelsohn the seat t did not. he will face david schwartzman in november. in ward one, jim graham won the democrat you can primary with 57% of the vote there. >> incumbent harry thomas, jr.

defeated three challengers in the ward five democratic party. the race for d.c.'s congressional delegate, eleanor holmes norton captured 91% of the vote in the democratic primary. she faces challengers from both the republican and statehood green parties in november. again, the results results on all the primary races in d.c. and maryland will continue to control across your screen this morning during our newscast. straight ahead on fox 5, we have good news from the commerce department after all of that back to school shopping. we'll have the latest on the economy up next in today's business beat. stay with us. it is now 6:21.

business network in new york with more. let's start with the markets. >> good morning. we were down 18 points yesterday on the do you. that snapped a little bit of a winning streak we had, four days. we were able to stay flat on the asdaq and s&p. you mentioned real estate till numbers. we got pretty good retail numbers both from the commerce department overall in the month of august up 0. 4%. i know those numbers are pretty much meaningless but it was the highest month over month jump that wave seen going back to last spring. back to school shopping helped a little bit. although that has really spread out. it is more july, august, december. on an individual basis, best buy, can'tery's largest big box electronics retailer give us a good report. said good things about the remainder of the year selling a lot of cell phones and they are not discounting as much, steve. that is a big thing. kroger said the same thing. they said they aren't having to discount as much.

that is especially important for grocery stores around the country as their margins are tiny, paper thin. if they can just increase them a little bit, it make a big difference and goes right to their bottom line. a good day for the retail number but didn't help the stock market though. >> bad news for one pharmaceutical though. what happened? >> arena pharmaceuticals. this goes to show you how much these pharmaceutical companies and biopharma companies put all their eggs in one or would baskets. one of their three diet drugs is one that the fda may approve t would be the first diet pill to be approved by the fda in over a decade. it tyke hit yesterday. some scientists at the fda saying, even though it did promote weight loss, there were some bad side effects, heart problems, psychiatric problems. certainly certainly those would

live report. >> that is all coming up in just a little bit. let's get a look at the forecast for this midweek. >> not a bad day today. it will be a very pleasant day across the region today. temperatures in the 80s an lots of sunshine. let's take a look at what is happening right now with the current conditions being reported at reagan national airport where it is 63 degrees. the winds are calm, barometric pressure on the rise. here is a look at your satellite-radar. things are quiet across the region. couple of clouds here and there. that is about it. that is the way it shall be all day today. your forecast for today then looks like this. mostly sunny skies. a cool start to the morning. many of our viewers are in the 50s this morning. we are looking if a high temperature of about 83 degrees. yesterday, we madeup84 degrees so not a bad day. coming up in about 15 minutes, today's edition of ask the weather guys. it is the question that i'm already being asked more and more often, what do we have in

on-time traffic. vincent gray has toppled mayor adrian fenty in the democratic primary in the race to d.c. mayor. with 90% of the precincts reporting, gray won 53 to 46%. this pretty much guarantees grey will be the next mayor of tease since there is no republican running in the election. matt ackland joins us with more. >> reporter: it still appears even after this big win last night, this morning, that the city is still divided. a gentleman came up to me and asked me who won last night. i said vincent gray and he hook his head and said that is not a good thing. but then five minutes later, another man came up to me and i said good morning. he said it is a good morning because we have a new mayor. a big celebration last night. it took some time for the election results to come in but then right around 2:00, the chairman, convincement gray,

walked up in front of all his supporters and thanked them for their help. he sawed it is time to get past the campaign, to become district residents again and work towards one goal as one city. but there is a lot of criticism when it comes to how the votes came in last night. remember, everything wrapped up at 8:00, all the voting did. we were hoping that we would get some kind of results maybe an hour, two hours afterwards but they came late. this morning, the board of elections is defending their actions. >> the vote total was light. the issue it is new voting equipment. this is the first time we've had the voting equipment in the district and it is taking some time to get us through the process. this is typical of what happens

when you introduce new voting equipment for the jurisdiction. >> come november when there is the general election, they will have the cichgs worked out and everything should work perfectly. the ap is reporting that the mayor has conceded the primary and he is expected to call chairman gray sometime this morning. we'll keep you updated other this story. back to you guys. in maryland, the race for governor is set. it will be a rematch of the 2006 battle between bob ehrlich and martin o'malley. o'malley won the democratic nomination with 86% of the vote beating challengers j. f. cusick and ralph jaffe. we are also watching another big race in maryland for bridge county executive. rushern baker is now the democratic candidate. we get more now from stacy cohan live outside the county administration building this morning.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, it appears rushern baker won with quite a comfortable margin, 44% of the vote. his next closest competitor sheriff michael jackson coming in with 33% of the vote. quite a celebration among his supporters last night when the news came down that rushern baker had won. mr.baker will be taking over for jack johnson, the man who beat him twice before in this contest for county executive. there were a handful of other people in the race but it was at the end, a race between the two. baker said last night he knows there is a very big job ahead. >> we feel really good about where we are right now. the campaign came through. we knew we were doing well in

all sexes of -- sections of the county. the most important thing is the education system. >> reporter: now that the party is over think it will be to work white quickly. we understand mr. baker is having a press conference at 11:00 a.m. in largo. perhaps we'll hear more about what his plans are once takes over. thank you. in the hotly contest the race for state's attorney in prince george's county, angela alsobook easily won there. she had the endorsement of outgoing state's attorney glen ivey. as results continue to scroll on your screen, you can find

the complete results on myfoxdc.com. christine o'donnell beat out cassell in delaware. charles rangel is awaiting trial by the house ethics committedee on 13 separate violations of ethics rules. the 80-year-old lawmaker has hinted he might be willing to agree to a settlement of those charges. while in new hampshire, former attorney general kelly ayot attempt has moved ahead of tea party candidate ovide lamontagne in the race for the republican u.s. senate primary. this one too close to call. ayotte is backed by the gop establishment and endorsed by sarah palin. now to some other top stories we are following ache hostage standoff in maryland. it all started around 10:00 last night. a man with a gun walked into a home in the 8 # hundred block of richboro road in forestville, got into an argument with a woman and is now holding her inside the home there. list are trying to talk to him

still to end this standoff peacefully. there were you other people inside when this all went down. they were all able to get out okay. montgomery county police are searching for more suspects in a burglary attempt and car theft. it happened around 2:00 this morning in the area of river road and goldsboro road in bethesda. police got a call about suspects lurking near a home. they tried to break in, police say but fled in a stolen vehicle when officers arrived. so far, no one has been arrested. after more than a year in custody, we are hearing from sarah shourd. >> the american woman was freed from an iranian prison but she had to leave her fiancee and their friend behind. before a report or a long emotional hug between a mother and daughter as an american is freed from an iranian prison. share assured spent 13 months behind dollars. >> i can't enjoy my freedom without them. they should be standing here with me.

u.s. senate. democratic incumbent barbara mikulski easily beat six challengers to win her party's nomination for a fifth term. mikulski will face republican eric wargos in november. he topped the field of 11 candidates with 39% of the vote. now, onto some of the congressional primaries in maryland. out on the eastern shore, andy harris won the republican primary in district one. he will take on democratic incumbent frank kratovil coming up in november. donna edwards won her party's primary for the democrats. she will face republican robert broaddus in the election. steny hoyer handily beat two challengers. he will face charles lawler in november. in district six, andrew duck won the democratic primary

there. we will take on incumbent republican roscoe bartlett. chris van holiday len hollen won his party'snomination. backk to you. tony is here with a look at the forecast. >> it is another cool start similar to yesterday when we had many areas with temperatures in the 50s. in the district, temperatures in the low 60s and here and there, they were in the 60s but many of you are in the 50s early this morning so you do want to be aware of that. we've got a few clouds. sunrise begins in just a couple of moments. here is a look at the current temperatures around the region. we are at 63 degrees in washington. look at all the 50s out there. 52 in gaithersburg. 52 in frederick. 50 in manassas. quantico, 58 degrees. 52349 stevensville, it is 60 degrees in annapolis. here is a look at the satellite- radar for the eastern united

states and our region. not much going on here. couple of clouds down to our south and off to the east. that is about it. for the most part, skies are clear and we'll see a lot of clear sky today. lots of sunshine. out to the west there, a frontal system. associated with that front, we do have rain showers across the plains. that front gets through here tomorrow night into try and it could trigger some showers an maybe a couple of thunderstorms here and there thursday night into friday morning but for today, mostly sunny skies, a cool start to the day but a warm afternoon. look if a high of about 8 # degrees later on today. then take a look at the five- day forecast. tomorrow, we start with some sun but we'll get more clouds building in as the day progresses. look for a high of about 85 degrees and a chance of some showers thursday night into very early friday morning. we'll see gradual clearing on friday. high about 80 and right now, the weekend looks great. saturday and sunday, highs in the low 80s with plenty of sunshine. not bad at all. >> yeah. >> that is the weather. it is time now for ask the

weather guys. tucker barnes and i put our big geeky weather heads touring to answer your most pressing weather questions, weather- related or otherwise. today's question comes from crisis teen. she writes, we are experiencing such beautiful weather here and i was wondering, is there anywhere in the country where snow has fallen yet or is it too early in the season? good question, christine. it is a little bit too early but we are getting close to the time when parts of the country will begin to see snow. do you have any idea what part of the country? >> mike maybe the parts like the mountains. >> i would say denverish area. >> seattle, maybe some of the mountains around there. >> all right. tucker barnes, fill these kind folks in on where we are likely to see snow first. we have not seen any measurable snow hit the ground yet.

>> across the lower 48, yes. we will show you that, if you look in the northern rockies, this time of year, that is the place to go. mountains of northern rockies. we are up near yellowstone park in northwest wyoming noorks montana, idaho that, part of the world. jackson hole, wyoming has in the forecast about an inch of snow in the next couple of days. and big sky, montana, several inches of snow. it is typical this time of year. >> yeah, usually late september is when you first start to see that. you may have missed this last week touring the 9:00 show. we had on the editor of the old farmer's almanac who i asked about the forecast, what their forecast is for our area speaking of snow for this winter. here it is according to the old farmer's almanac, their official forecast for the mid- atlantic, higher than average snowfall this upcoming winter. not as much snow as last year. it would be hard to get that much snow but heavier snow than
